I’m kind of a foodie and have always loved children’s picture books, so you’ll probably see both influences at work in the prints for sale here. My designs tend to be more whimsical than serious, though they sometimes muster themselves to convey MESSAGES OF GREATER IMPORT. This does, however, take more energy, so it doesn't reliably occur.
A basic note on basic technique: First I create a sketch and transfer it onto a woodblock when I’m satisfied. I carve away everything but the design I want to appear on paper, with more colors necessitating additional carved woodblocks (i.e. the raccoon “Danger” print is made from two blocks of wood, with complementary parts carved away). After the carving, comes a flurry of printing activity in my basement—I hand pull each print and then hang them up to dry throughout my basement and house. Very festive or rather cluttered, depending on how you look at it!
Since this is a hand-done process at all stages, small variations will appear from print to print. This creative process is important to me and I want people to really enjoy the resulting prints! I package and mail each piece with care, and am open to your feedback. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, special requests, or retail possibilities. In the meantime, Welcome to Cakeasaurus!
And welcome 2009! Another year of growing creativity. Woohoo!
